Army 1st Lt. Scott Baber, a Maumee native, has been awarded the Bronze Star medal for service with the Army's 1st Armored Division during its deployment to Iraq.

A 1998 graduate of Maumee High School and 2002 graduate of Bowling Green State University, Lieutenant Baber deployed from his home station of Wiesbaden, Germany. He was a military police platoon leader with the 501st Military Police Company for five months at a small Army post southwest of Baghdad. He is scheduled to be redeployed in August to Wiesbaden.

While stationed in Iraq, Lieutenant Baber, 24, corresponded with Maumee sixth graders about geography, history, language arts, and current events through letters, e-mail messages, and photographs.
