Road salt prices near average

The price of road de-icing salt has fallen back to its usual level, according to officials of both Sylvania and Sylvania Township.

The two governments join each year in purchasing the salt. Last year the cost was $61.18 per ton. This year, the price will be $28.71 per ton, much closer to the average over recent years, said to Jeffrey Ballmer, city'spublic service director.

Sylvania Mayor Craig Stough said last winter's mild temperatures apparently caused the drop in price and the inevitable "supply and demand'' has worked this year in the governments' favor.
