Hours are set for trick-or-treaters

Toledo's ghost and goblin lookalikes will be hitting the streets in search of treats Halloween night. The city will observe Halloween from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.

Authorities offer the following suggestions to make trick-or-treating a safe experience.

  • Wear close-fitting, bright-colored, flame-retardant costumes made of reflective material. The costumes shouldn't drag on the ground. Put identification in costumes. Avoid open flames.

  • Wear makeup or masks that fit securely and have large eyeholes.

  • Dress according to the weather, and wear good shoes. Carry accessories made of soft, pliable material.

  • Children should be accompanied by responsible adults or teenagers. Carry flashlights.

  • Stay in your own neighborhood. Walk on sidewalks or on the left side of the road, facing traffic. Cross at corners. Obey traffic signals. Go to houses where porch lights are on and stay at the doorway.

  • Collect treats in a cloth-style bag. Inspect all treats. Discard anything that appears to have been tampered with.

Authorities urge motorists to drive slowly, watch for trick-or-treaters, and be ready to stop.

Homeowners should remove items from yards and porches that can be carried away, broken, or tripped over. Keep pets contained and open flames away from visitors and decorations.
