Hayes center in Fremont hires executive director
FREMONT — A Rhode Island professor and historical consultant has been named executive director of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center.
Murney Gerlach will become the center's top official Aug. 1, replacing Roger Bridges, who is retiring July 31 after 15 years as executive director.
Dr. Gerlach, who lives in Barrington, R.I., was chosen from a field of more than 200 applicants. He teaches history at Rhode Island College, the University of Rhode Island, and Bryant College. He was director and chief executive officer of the Rhode Island Historical Society from 1999 to 2001.
The Hayes Presidential Center, affiliated with the Ohio Historical Society, is the oldest presidential library in the United States.
