Tug sinks in Maumee Bay; 2 crewmen rescued

The two-man crew of a tug boat was rescued yesterday after their vessel sank in the shipping channel of Maumee Bay near Oregon, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.

Petty Officer Brian Krouse said the Prairie Land, a tug believed to be planning to help sailing ships during the Parade of Sails that was part of the Huntington Tall Ships Toledo festival, reported taking on water about 10 a.m.

A nearby salvage vessel owned by South Shore Towing took the tug's two crew members aboard. They were not hurt.

Coast Guard officials speculated that a water intake hose to the engine may have broken, causing the tug to take on water. A salvage barge and crane will attempt to remove the tug today.
