Deputy, 2nd driver hurt in crash in I-475

An off-duty Lucas County sheriff's deputy and another man were hurt yesterday in an accident on westbound I-475 just past the Upton Avenue entrance ramp that caused a second noninjury, rear-end crash, Toledo police said.

Deputy Gerald Harris was in fair condition in Toledo Hospital. The other driver, Shane Anderson, 22, was taken to St. Anne Mercy Hospital. No information on his condition was available.

Mr. Anderson's car hit Deputy Harris' car in the rear about 1 p.m. The cars hooked together, went across the highway, and hit a concrete divider wall. Deputy Harris' car turned, broke free, and slid down the wall facing the wrong way. Mr. Anderson's car went across the Interstate and onto a grass median, police said.

Afterward, a car that stopped for the accident was rear-ended by another car.

Police said no one was hurt in the second accident.
