West Toledo man is killed after stepping into traffic

A West Toledo man died about 30 minutes after police said he stepped into traffic on I-475 at Douglas Road and was hit by a car, authorities said.

Jeffrey G. Verdon, 39, of 2162 Mansfield Rd., died about 7:50 p.m. Wednesday at Toledo Hospital.

Thomas Subleski, 44, of 643 Waybridge Rd., was westbound on I-475 as Mr. Verdon was standing underneath an overpass, swaying back and forth as if he was getting ready to dart across the interstate. Mr. Verdon then stepped out in front of Mr. Subleski's car, turned, and faced it, police said.

Mr. Subleski tried to avoid Mr. Verdon but his car hit him, knocking him to the pavement, police said.

The investigation is continuing.
