Bajik, a 1-year-old Bornean orangutan, has gone on display in the Kingdom of the Apes area at the Toledo Zoo. Bajik which means good and wholesome in the Indonesian language was born here April 23, 2004, to Kutai and Boomer and was hand-reared by zoo staff initially because Kutai didn t behave maternally toward him. He was introduced to his aunt, MJ, who began to act in a maternal fashion toward him; he hasn t been exhibited till yesterday to allow him to develop the strength to climb on his own and to build up his bond with MJ, zoo offi cials said. Only Bajik and MJ will occupy the indoor orangutan exhibit while he becomes accustomed to the public and confi dent in climbing around the exhibit. Once he does, Bajik will be introduced to the outdoor exhibit and to his parents.
