Area charity collects $272,000 for Katrina

The Toledo office of Catholic Charities received more than $272,000 locally for Hurricane Katrina relief, Lou Cocchiarella, the group s director, announced yesterday.

Eighty percent of all the donations will be sent to Catholic Charities USA to support national relief efforts. The balance will be used locally to provide assistance to hurricane evacuees referred to the Toledo office, Mr. Cocchiarella said.

The money will also be used to assist local parishes that are providing evacuees with housing and other services.

Catholic Charities USA reported that 96 to 97 percent of the donations made for the Hurricane Katrina victims will go directly to victim assistance.
