South Byrne Road from Mercer Street to Airport Highway was closed for 12 hours yesterday after a car struck a fire hydrant, causing the street to flood.
Kevin Wilson of 1764 Freeman St. told police he was driving south on Byrne about 5:35 a.m. when he swerved left of center to avoid striking a stopped vehicle and struck the hydrant.
The five-lane road, which already was down to two lanes because of construction, had to be shut down until city crews could repair the hydrant and water lines.
