Possible leak at plant spurs evacuation in Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN A manufacturing plant and the surrounding area were evacuated last night because of a possible gas leak, authorities said.

Fire crews were called to RemTec International, 436 North Enterprise St., about 10:30 p.m. for a possible leak of what was believed to be a chlorine-type substance.

Perrysburg s hazardous materials unit was on scene early today with representatives from the company investigating the leak, authorities said.

RemTec recycles potentially harmful gases from fire extinguishers, refrigeration equipment, and other products.

Bowling Green police and fire crews set up a safe zone north to south from Ridge to East Court Street and east to west from just past North Prospect Street to Enterprise, authorities said.

Police asked those in the area to remain in their homes, but for those who wanted to evacuate, the American Red Cross set up a shelter at Bowling Green State University s Anderson Arena, and BGSU s Bowen-Thompson student union was opened.
