U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) is in Monterrey, Mexico, today with the Farm Labor Organizing Committee to fight corruption in labor recruitment and defend the lives of human-rights workers.
Santiago Rafael Cruz, a FLOC staff field organizer, was tortured and murdered at the organization s offices in Monterrey in early April. He helped migrant workers go to the United States fairly, and routinely investigated grievances concerning recruitment and employment conditions. FLOC has been pressing the Mexican government to find Mr. Cruz s killers and to protect FLOC employees.
Miss Kaptur will speak at the dedication of the FLOC offices in Monterrey at 1:30 p.m., hold a 3 p.m. news conference, and later meet with Mexican government officials.
