Veteran councilman to leave Sylvania post

Dr. Read Backus has announced his resignation after more than 36 years as a member of Sylvania City Council.

Dr. Backus, 74, said he is looking forward to traveling with his wife, Dorie, after retiring from his dental practice 2 months ago. I m just so busy being retired, he said.

A replacement will be appointed to serve out the remaining 18 months of his term.

Applications will be accepted until noon Aug. 8. Interviews will be conducted Aug. 11 before a committee-of-the-whole meeting.
