Toledoan crowned Miss Piney Woods

Seventeen-year-old Samantha Brown of Toledo has been crowned Miss Piney Woods 2009-2010 at the Piney Woods School in Piney Woods, Miss.

The coronation of Miss Brown and 16-year-old Sidwell Mashile was held in conjunction with the centennial celebration of the school, which was founded in 1909 by Laurence Clifton Jones.

The ceremony in which Miss Brown and young Mashile were selected as class and dormitory queen and king was attended by faculty, family, and students.

"In order to lead, you must first set positive examples for others to follow," Miss Brown said.

"This is not just a title, but a task to benefit my school and fellow classmates."

Piney Woods School is a private co-educational school and one of only four historically African-American boarding schools in the United States.
