'Teenage drama' blamed

Police called after fight inside Perrysburg High School's cafeteria

Throwing lettuce escalated into throwing punches during a fight inside the Perrysburg High School cafeteria today.

Nobody was seriously injured, although Perrysburg police were called to the scene, officials said.

A 16-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl, who regularly ate lunch together but did not appear to be dating, threw food at each other from across the table around 12:55 p.m. today.

Some students intervened and the food-throwing stopped, Perrysburg Superintendent Tom Hosler said.

But the fight intensified a short time later with one of the students throwing a water bottle and the other tossing milk at the other, the superintendent said.

“They stood up. There was a 10-second span where they went at it before it was broken up,” he said.

Students and school staff broke up the fight, which caused a commotion in the cafeteria, and the students were taken to the office.

Their parents were notified, and they will both likely be suspended for seven to 10 days, Mr. Hosler said.

“It’s certainly not something that’s common or is tolerated, but it nevertheless happens,” he said.

Assistant principal David Boyce said the fight started over “teenage drama.”

Police Chief Daniel Paez could not be reached for comment this afternoon. His office said there was an ongoing investigation into the fight.
