Ceremony honors dead of Fitzgerald

A memorial ceremony to honor the 29 sailors lost aboard the SS Edmund Fitzgerald 30 years ago during a storm on Lake Superior will be held at 7 tonight aboard the S.S. Willis B. Boyer Museum Ship, berthed on the Maumee River at International Park.

Thomas Walton, vice president and editor of The Blade, will be the keynote speaker. Mr. Walton served on the Fitzgerald in 1963. His uncle, Ralph Walton, was aboard the Fitzgerald when it sank Nov. 10, 1975.

The ceremony will include a performance of a play about the Fitzgerald by students from Wayne State University's department of theater.

The gangways open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. Ticket holders may sign up for the 5:30 p.m. tour of the freighter.
