BGSU athlete put in diversion program
BOWLING GREEN A Bowling Green State University hockey player charged with stealing a bicycle and with underage alcohol consumption was placed in a diversion program yesterday in Bowling Green Municipal Court.
Jonathan Matsumoto, 19, must complete six hours of community service, attend an alcohol education program, and pay a $250 program fee, according to city Prosecutor Matthew Reger.
He said if Mr. Matsumoto has no more offenses in the next five months, the alcohol charge would be dismissed.
Mr. Reger said he agreed to drop the theft charge because of the circumstances.
Mr. Matsumoto was intoxicated Jan. 4 when a campus police officer saw him take a bike from a bike rack near Hayes Hall.
The officer chased him, and the bicycle was returned to its owner undamaged.
