Manor Care profit up; Libbey's loss bigger

Manor Care Inc., Toledo, yesterday reported second-quarter profit of $45.6 million, or 58 cents a share, up 20 percent from $38.1 million, or 43 cents a share, in the same period a year ago.

The nation's largest nursing-home operator said revenue for the quarter was $894.2 million, up 7 per cent from $833.8 million a year ago. The firm declared a cash dividend of 16 cents a share, payable Aug. 28 to holders of record Aug. 14.

Libbey Inc. said yesterday that it lost $9.6 million, or 68 cents a share, in the second quarter, worse than a loss of $900,000, or 6 cents a share, in the prior-year period.

The Toledo manufacturer of drinking glasses and tableware said quarterly sales rose 9 percent to $158 million from $145 million in 2005's second quarter. The firm blamed the higher loss on special charges regarding a Mexican business purchase.
