Man guilty of smuggling drugs into Van Wert jail

VAN WERT, Ohio A third person charged in an attempt to smuggle drugs into the Van Wert County jail pleaded guilty to a charge of illegal conveyance of drugs of abuse onto the grounds of a detention facility.

David Eccard, 44, of Van Wert had originally pleaded not guilty to a two-count indictment of the same offense on Sept. 21 in Van Wert County Common Pleas Court, where bond was set at $15,000.

The other two people charged in the incident were Shannon Hartman of Convoy, Ohio, and Elmico Crisp, who was in jail at the time and was to receive a prescription drug and marijuana.

Hartman has pleaded guilty and testified on Sept. 18, when Crisp was found guilty. Eccard s sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 1.
