Trial begins in slaying near Lagrange St. store

A Lucas County Common Pleas Court jury heard opening statements yesterday in the murder trial of Charles Mickey Rodriguez.

Mr. Rodriguez, 22, whose last known address was the 900 block of Homer Ave., is charged in the shooting death of General Hurst, 22, in front of a North Toledo convenience store.

Authorities said Mr. Hurst walked out of the Dairy Mart, 3380 Lagrange St., shortly after 11:30 p.m. Dec. 31, was confronted by an armed suspect, and was shot as he tried to get away. He stumbled to the 200 block of East Pearl Street before collapsing in a yard there. He died a short time later in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

The trial will continue today.
