Mother, boyfriend indicted in toddler s death

A Toledo mother and her boyfriend were indicted by a Lucas County grand jury today on murder and manslaughter charges related to the death of her 23-month-old son on the day after Christmas.

Antionette Hairston, 25, of 1702 Ottawa Drive, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and felony child endangering. Her boyfriend, Mitchell Moore, 20, also of the Ottawa Drive address, was charged with one count each of murder, involuntary manslaughter, felonious assault, and child endangering.

If convicted, Mr. Moore faces life in prison. The child s mother faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Tayvon Evans died Dec. 26 at Toledo Hospital, shortly after he was brought there unconscious, with cuts on his wrists, a burn on his leg, bruising, lacerations, and injuries to his head and chest. Ms. Hairston and Mr. Moore were arrested the same day and charged with felony child endangering.

Both remain in custody in lieu of $500,000 bonds each.

Ms. Hairston appeared in Toledo Municipal Court this morning where her preliminary hearing was continued until Monday. On Wednesday, she was escorted by jail officials to the funeral home that is handling her child s arrangements.

According to court records, Mr. Moore admitted to police that he beat the child and that the abuse had occurred over the course of several days.
