Patient accused in death to remain in treatment

A Toledo man found incompetent in August to stand trial on a murder charge will continue to receive treatment at a mental health facility, a Lucas County Common Pleas Court judge decided yesterday.

Sharon John Hawkins, 64, is accused of beating his nursing home roommate with a towel bar in March, 2006, causing the death two weeks later of Norbert Konwin, 77, who sustained fractured ribs, a fractured nose, and a collapsed lung in the assault.

Mr. Hawkins has been under the care of mental health professionals since the attack. Yesterday, Judge Gary Cook ordered Mr. Hawkins to continue with treatment after receiving a report from a doctor at Twin Valley Behavioral Healthcare System-Columbus Campus, where Mr. Hawkins is being treated.

The report indicated Mr. Hawkins will further "stabilize" with more treatment. Mr. Hawkins will remain in the facility until an updated report indicates he is competent to stand trial, Judge Cook said.
