Lucas County law enforcement officials will be paying extra attention Friday night to the safety of children s Trick-or-Treat goodies and the roads their parents may use to take them on their candy canvasses or to go to Halloween parties.

County sheriff s deputies will volunteer off-duty hours to screen candy with X-ray machines and metal detectors in the lobby of the Lucas County Juvenile Justice Center from 6 to 9 p.m.

Parents should inspect candy before letting their children have any. Treats that seem questionable should be brought to the justice center, officials said.

Parking for the candy screening is on the street outside the center, 1801 Spielbusch Ave., across from the Federal Courthouse.

Deputies also will have extra patrols during the Halloween weekend, including a sobriety checkpoint Saturday in Springfield Township, to focus on impaired drivers, speeders, and other traffic violators.

The sobriety checkpoint s exact time and place will be announced 24 hours before its start. A state grant pays for the extra patrols overtime pay.
