A $10,000 grant recently awarded to the Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio will be used to buy fresh produce from local farmers for Lucas County s senior citizen meal program.
The grant, from the Farmland Protection Partnership Program, is aimed at testing ideas that will support the viability of local farms.
Most of the produce purchased for meals through the Lucas County Senior Nutrition meal program is either canned or frozen.
The grant will allow for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables to help boost flavor and nutrition while also helping local farmers.
