As Carty Finkbeiner's mayoral term and long political career come to a close, the scramble is on to replace him in the city's top job. The six people running for mayor of Toledo offer a variety of experiences and platforms and come from Republican, Democratic, and independent political affiliations. They will compete in Tuesday's nonpartisan primary, with the two highest vote-getters to face off on Nov. 3.

The Mid-American Conference quarterback derby just got another entry. Showing some incredible athleticism and shocking playmaking abilities, University of Toledo quarterback Aaron Opelt threw for 319 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for 109 yards and two touchdowns in a 54-38 win over Colorado at the Glass Bowl Friday night in front of 20,082.

Opening this weekend within Toledo city limits is the newest, biggest, and flashiest YMCA of the greater Toledo system - titles long ceded to the suburbs. The new $8.2 million home of the West Toledo YMCA, 2020 Tremainsville Rd., boasts more than 75,000 square feet and is three times the size of the old West Toledo branch it replaces.

Two area teenagers are in critical condition after being struck by a car Friday night while riding their bicycles along County Road 62 in Seneca County. Shane Tobin, 18, of Toledo, and Brett Hensinger, 17, of Bellevue, were riding eastbound along the roadway in Thompson Township at about 9:15 p.m. when they were hit by a car traveling the same direction, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. Troopers said that the vehicle's operator, Coleman Flanigan, 28, of Norwalk, failed to maintain an assured clear distance from the teens' bikes. Mr. Flanigan then fled the scene in his 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix, the patrol said.

It may have been "ill-advised" to threaten to castrate an irate caller, but Hancock County Commissioner Emily Walton said Friday she has no plans to resign her elected office. "Suffice to say, it was an ill-advised comment precipitated by my unsuccessful request that he treat our staff politely and with respect," said Dr. Walton, a long-time veterinarian. The second-term Republican commissioner told Jeff Davidson during a telephone conversation Sept. 3 that she ought to castrate him and had the tools to do it.

Six people were in area hospitals Sunday morning after being injured in a two-car crash the night before in western Lucas County, at least two of them seriously, the Ohio Highway Patrol said. Darrius Wilson, a passenger in one of the cars, was flown to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition, according to a hospital spokesman.

Her brother was killed in action, his plane downed over Normandy eight weeks after D-Day. Yet a phone call out of the blue from a reporter brought too much news at once, even 65 years later: Wreckage of the P-51 Mustang fl own by 1st Lt. William D. Lacey, Jr., of East Toledo and the former Oregon Township had been unearthed in France. “After all this time, it just brings up hopes again, and I just can't quite put it together,” his sister, Jeanne Woolems, 82, said.

The cardiac fractures continue for the Ohio State Buckeyes, the designated heartbreak kids of college football. The Buckeyes led No. 3 ranked Southern California for the better part of the game here Saturday night, but allowed the Trojans to drive nearly the length of the field in the closing minutes and escape with an 18-15 win. For Ohio State, it was the sixth straight loss to a top-five rated team, and the Buckeyes seventh straight loss to USC.
