3 Toledo women, 1 Michigan woman killed in head-on crash in Oklahoma

BARNSDALL, Okla. - Three Toledo women and a Southgate, Mich. woman were killed and five people were injured in a head-on collision on State Rt. 11 that involved three vehicles, authorities said.

Christine Fulghum, 69, of Toledo, who was driving a minivan, and all the passengers in the vehicle: Martha Jacobs, 85, and Levonne Gantt, whose age is unknown - both also of Toledo - and Norma Otterstetter, 84, of Southgate, Mich., were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred Sunday about 1 miles east of Barnsdall, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The minivan was eastbound on Route 11 about 4:25 p.m. when it collided head-on with a westbound pickup truck driven by Stephen Berg, 62, of Barnsdall, who had fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the pickup to drive left of center and into the path of the oncoming minivan, troopers at the Perry, Okla., post said.

The minivan was then struck in the rear by another pickup truck, which was driven by Brenda Harris, 45, also of Barnsdall.

Injured were Ms. Harris, Mr. Berg, and three passengers in his pickup. One passenger was hospitalized in stable condition and the rest were treated and released, the troopers said.

The crash left Ms. Fulghum trapped in the wreckage for about five hours before she was freed with the Jaws of Life, according to the patrol.

Everybody involved in the crash were wearing seat belts, including a 3-year-old girl, who was properly restrained in a child safety seat in the Berg pickup, troopers said.
