Weekend in Review: On the Town, crash injures 4 teens, Toledo mom, 2 sons arrested

Four teenagers were injured Saturday when their car hit a tree in Sandusky County's Woodville Township, troopers with the Fremont post of the Ohio Highway Patrol said. The car, driven by Curtis Deckman, 17, of Gibsonburg was northbound on Lime Road about 5 p.m. when at a curve it drove off the left side of the road, returned to the roadway, and went off the left side of the road and into the tree, troopers said. Young Deckman was thrown from the car, as were passengers Ryder Brecht, 16, of Elmore and Stephanie Bauman, 15, of Toledo.

Toledo police have arrested a South Toledo mother and her two grown sons in the kidnapping and beating of the 16-year-old boyfriend of the mother's 18-year-old daughter. "They were upset that he was dating their daughter and their sister," Detective Danny Navarre said. About 10:30 p.m. Friday, Donna Sims, 40, of 538 Nebraska Ave. and her sons Alonzo Webb, 23, and Jamario Hornes, 18, stopped by Unit 1172 of 522 Eastern Ave., the residence of Ms. Sims' daughter Schardez Hornes.

Unless there is a fundamental change in the way Toledo's government operates, the city will likely be unable to pay its employees before the year is through, a top official in the Bell administration warned. That looming financial disaster leads people such as Mayor Mike Bell and Councilman D. Michael Collins to throw out words like "bankruptcy" or "receivership," two feared terms but ones that are not likely to become reality.

Toledo is a melting pot of people from all walks of life and backgrounds. Yet these folks have at least one thing in common: doing their part in making their community a better place in which to live by helping others in need.

It was tough to pass by her best friend's empty locker, tougher still to sit through the two classes she knew they were supposed to share. Bri Mullinger, 16, returned to Springfield High School Friday nearly three months after she and her best friend, Cody Brown, were struck by a fast-moving Amtrak train they tried to beat on the way to school Dec. 16.

As part of their employment with various Toledo-area businesses, Robert L. Taylor, Adam R. Shank, and Dominique L. Lawson had access to clients' names, birthdates, and Social Security numbers, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. But instead of keeping the information confidential, the three allegedly sold the identities - more than 125 of them - to another man, Robert Hines.

A longtime Toledo-area dealer of Korean-made automobiles has had its franchise terminated and no longer can sell or do warranty service on the vehicles, court records show. The Ohio Motor Vehicle Dealers Board last month upheld a hearing officer's ruling that Hyundai Motors America is within its rights to terminate the franchise of Brown Hyundai, 5625 West Central Ave., Sylvania Township.
