A 20-year-old man died hours after a rescue diver found his body in the Maumee River near Walbridge Park and rushed him to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.
Friends identified the victim as Craig Seymour, a worker at Applebee's restaurant whose 21st birthday would have been Saturday.
Mr. Seymour and four friends were swimming 25 to 30 feet from the boat launch at the South Toledo park when he began to struggle, Battalion Chief Bob Krause of the Toledo Fire Department said.
Three people swam back to shore and a fourth was rescued from a nearby island, a rescue official said.
Mr. Seymour was pronounced dead at 6:49 p.m. at Mercy St. Vincent.
