Lucas County GOP chairman to spearhead county reform effort

THE BLADE

The chairman of the Lucas County Republican Party said Monday that he is reviving a floundering effort to put a revision plan for county government on the November ballot.

Chairman Jon Stainbrook said he has 35 volunteers ready to collect the necessary 14,289 signatures by the filing deadline. The Ohio Attorney General's office has reported the deadline as July 15, though some local officials have been told it is July 25.

Mr. Stainbrook's proposed form of government is nearly identical to that of Cuyahoga County. It would replace the current system of three commissioners and eight row offices with a county executive, an 11-district county council, and prosecutor.

Lucas County Commissioner Ben Konop, a Democrat, put forth a similar plan but recently dropped it following lackluster support from the local business community.
