Man who shot caged dog was barred from gun use
Lawrence Mick, one of two men accused of repeatedly shooting a caged German shepherd while the dog howled, has a drug conviction and is prohibited from using a firearm.
Mick, 57, of 631 Federal St., has been charged with a third-degree felony for allegedly using the weapon. If convicted, he could be sentenced to one to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. He is being held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of $25,000 bond.
The other charges Mick faces - obstructing official business, discharging a firearm, inducing panic, and cruelty to animals - are misdemeanors for which he can be sentenced to no more than six months in prison and a $1,000 fine for each conviction.
Mick and another man, Adam Collins, are accused of taking turns shooting the captive dog, named Sarge, Friday in the backyard of the Federal address with a 25-caliber pistol. The canine survived, with six bullets in its head and chest, and is with the Lucas County dog warden.
Mr. Collins, 35, of 317 River Pl., pleaded no contest in Toledo Municipal Court and was found guilty of cruelty to animals, inducing panic, giving false information to a police officer, and discharging a firearm. He was released on his own recognizance. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 21.
