Family left homeless after fire
A West Toledo family was left homeless yesterday after a garage fire damaged their single-story home.
Two adults and two pre-teen children escaped unhurt from the house at 2416 Wernert Ave. near Douglas Road before fire crews arrived about 6 a.m., Battalion Fire Chief Bob Krause said. "A garage fire spread to the house. The smoke alarm sounded, [and] the family ran out the front door," he said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, although an electrical short was suspected, he said. He estimated the damage at $25,000. The Red Cross is assisting the family.
