Johnson Controls, Jeep plant supplier fined

Johnson Controls Inc. has been fined $70,000 for failing to ensure employees working on a rooftop air conditioning unit had adequate protection to prevent a 40-foot fall to the ground below.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Johnson Controls for workplace safety violations after inspecting its downtown Toledo work site at 245 N. Superior St. on June 1.

The violation was corrected during the inspection. The company can contest the fine.

Ohio Module Manufacturing Co. LLC of 3900 Stickney Ave. also was cited for workplace safety violations by OSHA late last month.

The automotive parts supplier at Chrysler's Toledo Jeep assembly complex was fined $12,500 for not providing sufficient clearance for forklifts moving materials through the facility, and it had until Aug. 11 to fix the violation.

The firm can appeal the fine.
