Toledo pair die in crash
BOWLING GREEN - A Toledo couple were killed Sunday when they were thrown from their sport utility vehicle on I-75 four miles north of here, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.
Robert F. Lane, 66, and Margy Lane, 62, of 286th Street in Point Place, were southbound on the expressway at 2:50 p.m.
Their SUV went off the left side of the road three miles south of State Rt. 582.
The driver of the vehicle overcorrected, crossed both southbound lanes, and sideswiped a guardrail.
Troopers said it was not clear who was driving.
After the SUV struck the guardrail, the Lanes were thrown from the vehicle, according to Sgt. Scott Wyckhouse of the state patrol's Bowling Green post.
Neither was wearing a seat belt, troopers said.
After the Lanes were ejected, their SUV continued for an unspecified distance, crossing over the median and both northbound lanes of I-75 before stopping in a soybean field on the east side of the highway, just south of Simonds Road, the patrol said.
It was not known how fast the SUV was traveling when the accident occurred, Sergeant Wyckhouse said.
I-75 was closed in both directions for about three hours.
Traffic, already congested by holiday travelers, was backed up for more than eight miles, Sergeant Wyckhouse said.
The crash remains under investigation, troopers said.
