Pedestrian struck by SUV in Michigan, in critical condition

CARLETON, Mich. — A 95-year-old woman was in critical condition late Thursday after she was struck by a sport utility vehicle while crossing the road.

Veronica A. Guczwa, of Carleton, was flown by medical helicopter to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ypsilanti, Mich.

Monroe County sheriff's deputies said Ms. Guczwa was crossing Labo Road east of Exeter Road in Ash Township about 6:30 p.m. when she was struck by an SUV driven by Elizabeth A. Riley, 30, of Carleton.

Ms. Guczwa was trying to get from a parking lot on the south side of Labo to St. Patrick Church on the north side, deputies said.

Ms. Riley and her two passengers were not injured.
