Temperance boy on field trip falls ill, dies

BLADE STAFF

A 6-year-old student in the Bedford Public Schools died Thursday after he collapsed while on a field trip to the Toledo Zoo.

Nicholas Allore, of Temperance, was pronounced dead at 2:52 p.m., said Dr. Diane Barnett, Lucas County deputy coroner. He was transported by Life Squad to the University of Toledo Medical Center, authorities said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday. He had no history of medical problems, Dr. Barnett said.

The boy was at the zoo with students from Smith Road Elementary School. He complained of belly pain earlier, but not enough to stop him from the trip. When he collapsed, an emergency room physician was nearby and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Dr. Barnett said.

Family members declined to comment Thursday night.

Ted Magrum, superintendent of Bedford Public Schools, said counselors from the district and from Monroe County’s Intermediate School District will be at the school Friday to speak with students and teachers.

Other support will be provided by representatives of Gabby’s Ladder, a family and child grief center in Monroe.

In addition, the district offered to provide substitutes for teachers who want to take the day off, he said.

“It’s going to be tough on the staff,” he said.

The child was part of a group of about 50 kindergarten pupils on the field trip, the superintendent said.

“We want to express our sympathy and condolences to the family,” he said.

The Bedford school year ends Wednesday.
