Schools record thefts; honor set for ex-coach
Here's a look at last week's headlines on OurTownSylvania.com.
2 dozen thefts from lockers last year at Sylvania schools: Sylvania schools reported 22 thefts from buildings in 2011. Southview reported 19 of the thefts. Most of these crimes occur when students take iPhones, iPods, and wallets.
"These thefts occur when students leave items unattended," Dave McMurray, Southview's principal, said.
"We have our own discipline code and work with Sylvania police," he said. "The students get dual consequences."
The Sylvania police refer first-time offenders to the Sylvania Youth Diversion program, which is operated by the Sylvania Area Family Services center.
Former Sylvania cross-country coach to be inducted into state Hall of Fame (By Sylvania Schools): Ross Deye, former Sylvania teacher and cross-country coach, was nominated for the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame.
He is to be inducted Friday in Columbus.
A 1972 alumnus of Sylvania High School, he returned to guide Southview and Northview to statewide prominence.
His teams won multiple league titles and championships during his coaching career.
ProMedica Survivor Center at Flower Hospital helps patients posttreatment: The ProMedica Survivor Center opened in October as part of the Hickman Cancer Center on the Flower Hospital campus. A committee organized the center and took suggestions from survivors on how the program should run.
"The Survivor Center brought it all together," said Kelli Andres, a Sylvania resident and survivor center patient.
"They made it into one big, comprehensive plan. They walk you through everything."
Sylvania schools host debate: More than 1,200 students from more than 43 schools were in a debate competition Jan. 13 and 14 at Northview and Southview high schools and McCord Junior High.
