Jed's to shutter downtown site near ballpark after 2 years

Jed's at the Yard will serve up its last brews Thursday, as the downtown Toledo sports bar closes a little less than two years after it opened.

Co-owner Pete Govito said the location did good business from April to September, but sales lagged in the winter when there were no Toledo Mud Hens games to draw extra customers downtown.

"Breaking even a couple years in a row -- not really making a profit -- makes it tough to stay. It was just a good business decision for us, concentrating on our other restaurants. We hate leaving downtown, but it just didn't work out," Mr. Govito said.

He and his brother, Mike, operate Jed's locations in Maumee, Perrysburg, Bowling Green, and Hilliard, a Columbus suburb.

Jed's at the Yard, 2 S. St. Clair St., opened in April, 2010, just ahead of the Toledo Mud Hens' opening day. One of the larger sports bars downtown, it also was one of the few with its own parking lot.

The building is owned by Dave Ball, who owns several other properties in the Toledo area. Mr. Ball could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
