PANDORA, Ohio — A 77-year-old man who suffered acute hypothermia after spending about 30 minutes in an ice-covered pond as he tried to rescue his dog has died, authorities said.

Stan Newton of Riley Township died Friday at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, where he had been in critical condition, a hospital spokesman said.

The dog fell through the ice about 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, at which time authorities say Mr. Newton tried to rescue it and also fell in. The dog, a Labrador, was fine and at home, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

Pandora is about 55 miles southwest of Toledo.
