2 youths killed in Monroe Co. crash
ROCKWOOD, Mich. -- Two young passengers were killed in a head-on collision Wednesday on U.S. Turnpike Road at Labo Road in northern Monroe County near the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area, sheriff's deputies said.
Deputies said Iris M. Wagenaar, 18, of South Rockwood, Mich., was northbound on U.S. Turnpike at high speed about 3 p.m. when she lost control and crossed the center line into the southbound lane. Her car collided with a sport utility vehicle driven by Andrea Rose, 43, of South Rockwood.
Both vehicles landed in a field on the west side of U.S. Turnpike.
Pronounced dead at the scene were Morgan I. Wagenaar, 11, a front-seat passenger, and Peter S. Wagenaar, 17, who was seated in the rear, both of South Rockwood.
Also in the rear seat was Harley D. Wagenaar, 14, of South Rockwood, who with Peter was thrown from the vehicle.
Iris and Harley Wagenaar were taken to Oakwood Southshore Medical Center in Trenton, where they were in critical condition late Wednesday, deputies said.
Ms. Rose was taken to Oakwood Southshore, where she was treated. Deputies said alcohol did not appear to be a factor.
