Authorities pull 7 safes out of Ottawa River
Seven safes pulled from the Ottawa River Friday afternoon were found to be empty when authorities opened them Monday.
The safes were found in the water about 2 p.m. Friday by a man collecting scrap metal along the bank, near Jeep Parkway and West Central. He saw the safes sticking out of the water, according to a police incident report.
The Toledo Fire Department dive team took them from the water. They were stored over the weekend at the city impound lot to dry before finally opened.
Toledo police Sgt. Joe Heffernan said it appeared the safes had been “breached.” He said it’s unclear where they came from.
