Safe boating activities on tap for both river banks

BLADE STAFF

Several agencies will kick off National Safe Boating Week in Toledo with activities Saturday on both sides of the Maumee River.

The event, dubbed "Take Me Boating, Toledo," is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Skyway Marina and the Maritime Academy of Toledo. Activities include vessel safety inspections, safety displays, children's activities, boats on exhibit, and prize giveaways.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their life jackets to help break the world record for most life jackets worn at one time during a "Ready, Set, Wear It" event at 2 p.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard is to provide helicopter and flare demonstrations, and attendees will have an opportunity to steer a ship simulator.

Sponsors include the Ohio Department of Natural Resources division of watercraft, city of Toledo, Western Lake Erie Safe Boating Council, Toledo Sail and Power Squadron, and the Josh Project.
