Foot race to benefit Wounded Soldiers Fund

BELLEVUE, Ohio — Since Army Staff Sgt. Jon Martin was injured by an improvised explosive device in Iraq and died at a German hospital, friends and family have helped raise close to $50,000 for the Wounded Soldiers Fund and for a scholarship in his name.

On Memorial Day weekend, the Martin family is again asking the public to join them in raising funds in Sergeant Martin’s memory.

The fifth annual Jon L. Martin Memorial 5K Open Run and Military Race is set for Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Bellevue Rec Center, 800 Monroe St. in Bellevue, Ohio. Registrations will be accepted that morning.

A Bellevue native, Sergeant Martin, 33, died Nov. 22, 2007, two weeks after being badly injured by a roadside bomb.

Heather Martin of Port Clinton said her brother ran marathons. She said soldiers will be coming from all over the country to take part in the race as well as in a golf scramble and other events on Sunday.Race information is available at 419-307-7562.
