Toledo Mayor Mike Bell will host Patrick de la Lanne, mayor of Delmenhorst, Germany, for a gala dinner today at the Toledo Club that will reaffirm the two communities' sister-city relationship.
Delmenhorst and Toledo became sister cities in 2002, and both mayors will sign an updated pledge tonight to celebrate the continuation of the cities' 10-year relationship. The German city of 74,500 is one of Toledo's 10 sister cities, which are scattered across South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
The Sister Cities International program facilitates educational, cultural, and exchange programs for Toledo residents and their foreign counterparts.
"It is an opportunity for us to learn about the cultures of cities around the world that are similar in size, similar in geography to Toledo," said Jen Sorgenfrei, a mayoral spokesman.
Mayor Bell has never traveled to Delmenhorst, and this is Mayor de la Lanne's first visit to Toledo.
Mayor de la Lanne will meet with community members and city councilmen during his visit. Ms. Sorgenfrei said Mayor de la Lanne is also interested in learning more about the American political system and will meet with representatives of both major political parties.
