Agency issues warning on relief-funding scams

BLADE STAFF

The local Better Business Bureau is warning those who have been contacted about relief for victims of Hurricane Isaac about potential scams.

In years past, people have created fraudulent email fund-raisers to solicit money for supposed relief efforts for victims of natural disasters, said Dick Eppstein, president of the local BBB. "We want to warn people to call for some of these appeals without checking into them first," he said.

The agency warns against donating to unknown relief efforts and through unsolicited emails. Instead, contact legitimate agencies about donating, the agency suggests.
