Bittersweet Farms was among three non-profit organizations recognized today during the second annual Northwest Ohio Nonprofit Innovation & Excellence Awards breakfast at the Toledo Club.
Bittersweet, which provides services to individuals with autism, received the innovation award for its community-supported agriculture program that was created to help replace decreased funding from government sources and to provide meaningful work and training for its clients.
Also recognized was Beach House Family Shelter, which received the small agency excellence award, and Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. and Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc., which received the large agency excellence award.
Each of the organizations received a $5,000 grant from the Toledo Community Foundation to use as they see fit and a glass creation by artist Shawn Messenger.
The awards were started last year by the Community Foundation and The Blade in conjunction with the Center for Nonprofit Resources to recognize area nonprofit organizations for their contributions to the community.
