The Lucas County commissioners have unanimously elected Carol Contrada to lead the Board of Commissioners as President in 2013. Mrs. Contrada's election took place today at the commissioners' annual organizational meeting. The position has a one-year term.
Mrs. Contrada thanked Commissioners Pete Gerken and Tina Skeldon Wozniak for their previous leadership on the board, and reducing general fund expenditures at a time of declining revenues. Mr. Gerken served as President for the last four years, Ms. Woniak for the four years prior to that.
In looking ahead, Mrs. Contrada said she hopes to take a hard look at the county's efforts on economic development, regional partnerships, workforce development and criminal justice expenditures, the largest portion of the county's general fund budget.
Mrs. Contrada faces re-election in 2014. Mr. Gerken and Ms. Wozniak were both re-elected in 2012. All three are Democrats.
The commissioners also unanimously voted to change their weekly meeting time from 9:30 a.m. on Tuesdays to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.
