It’s one thing to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr., Day on the holiday. But how much do Toledo area teenagers really know about the civil rights leader’s legacy?

That’s what Kent Branch Library wants to know.

The library, at 3101 Collingwood Blvd., is hosting an “American Civil Rights Trivia” contest that will test the knowledge of teens in grades 6-12 from today through Saturday.

Quiz questions will be located on a display board in the library’s teen section, said Teen Librarian Will Harbauer. The quiz can be taken from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today or from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Everyone who takes the quiz will receive a free treat. Students who answer all the questions correctly will be entered in a drawing to win a free gift card.

“We wanted to do something special in honor of Dr. King,” Mr. Harbauer said. “This is a way to engage teens and help them appreciate the freedom and rights that we all enjoy.

“It’s important to remember our past and to learn from it.”

Mr. King was a clergyman, activist, and leader of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination on April 4, 1968.

Test your knowledge of the civil rights movement and take the quiz below. Some of these questions will be included in the teen quiz.

1) Q: The Supreme Court ruling in Brown vs. Board of Education said that racial segregation in schools violated which Amendment in the U.S. Constitution?

2) Q: What year was the Civil Rights Act signed into law?

3) Q: Where did Martin Luther King, Jr. give his “I have a Dream” speech?

4) Q: The NAACP was created in what year?

Answers:

1) 14th 2) 1964 3) Washington, D.C. 4) 1909
