2 people bitten by dog at Port Clinton shelter

PORT CLINTON, Ohio -- Two people were injured when they were attacked and bitten by a boxer-mix dog Tuesday night at an animal shelter in Port Clinton, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.

The names and conditions of the victims were not released. One of them was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, according to the North Central EMS.

One of the victims was "badly injured" and was "bleeding profusely" at the scene of the incident about 9:10 p.m. at Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary, Inc.'s animal rescue facility at 3620 E. State Rd., according to a written statement the sheriff's office released today.

Sheriff deputies responding to a report of two people attacked by a boxer-mix dog arrived and were confronted by a dog that would not let them get to the bleeding victim, according to the report. They then shot and injured the dog and removed the victim from the building, deputies said in the report.

The victims were treated for their injuries. The dog was later euthanized, the sheriff's office said.

Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary, Inc. describes itself as a non-profit animal rescue group.

Port Clinton is about 40 miles east of Toledo.
