BOTKINS, Ohio — A Toledo man was killed and his wife was injured when their van went out of control and drove across the median and into oncoming traffic.
Troopers at the Piqua, Ohio, post of the Ohio Highway Patrol said that Bret Woods, 46, of Toledo was northbound on I-75 near Botkins in Shelby County about 3:15 a.m. Tuesday when his van crossed the median. In the southbound lanes, the van’s driver’s side was struck by a tractor-trailer driven by Dean Harris of Oshawa, Ont.
The crash ruptured the semi’s fuel tank, spilling 200 gallons of diesel fuel. The rig jackknifed across both lanes of I-75. A semi driven by William Hildebrand, 76, of North Freedom, Wis., could not stop and struck Mr. Harris’ trailer.
Mr. Woods was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, Bernadette, was taken to Lima Memorial Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, troopers said. Mr. Hildebrand was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital, Sidney, Ohio, also with nonlife-threatening injuries. Troopers are investigating.
