Passenger traffic at Toledo Express Airport grew by 8.95 percent last month compared with March, 2012, for the first same-month increase in four years, according to the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority.
Port officials credited the increase to Allegiant Airlines, which in mid-February added twice-weekly service to Punta Gorda, Fla., to its Toledo schedule, which already had flights several times weekly to Sanford-Orlando and St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Fla. The 12,644 passengers who flew Allegiant in or out of Toledo last month accounted for more than two-thirds of the local airport's 18,766 total volume.
The port's announcement on Friday said agency officials are "cautiously optimistic" that growth will continue through the summer months.
